چکیده

Alzheimer's disease (AD), characterized by progressive loss of memory, language, reasoning and other cognitive functions, including dementia, is characterized pathologically by the presence of senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and synapse loss. Increased oxidative/nitrosative stress, decreased antioxidants, mitochondrial damage and other factors play major roles in the development and progression of AD. Strategies to reduce pro-oxidant species to ameliorate AD pathology have been proposed with mixed results. In this review, we focus on the most recent in vitro and in vivo antioxidant approaches for removing oxidant species with relevance to AD, including N-acetyl-l-cysteine, vitamin D, vitamin E, ferulic acid, tricyclodecan-9-yl-xanthogenate, selenium and melatonin as therapeutic stratagems in AD management. In addition, we reviewed the most effective mitochondria targeted antioxidants such as coenzyme Q10 and lipoic acid. We suggest the use of multitargeted approaches by formulas containing one or more antioxidant compounds may be more promising than single-agent approaches.

Oxidative Stress and its Role in Female Infertility and Assisted Reproduction: Clinical Implications

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in physiological functions and act as mediators in various signaling processes. Elevated or sustained generation of free radicals and non radical species derived from free radicals can lead to an imbalance in the intracellular redox homeostasis. Normally, any excess levels of reactive radical and nonradical species generated are intercepted by antioxid...

Antioxidant screening of some medicinal plants of Iran

One of the most reactive and dangerous agents for the living cells is reactive oxygen free radical species (ROS). When there is an imbalance between ROS generating and scavenging systems (oxidative stress), tissue damages will appear in human body such as degenerative disorders of CNS like Alzheimer's disease. Recently, a high interest in medicinal plants containing antioxidants has been increa...

Review: Alzheimer's amyloid beta-peptide-associated free radical oxidative stress and neurotoxicity.

Alzheimer's disease, the major dementing disorder of the elderly that affects over 4 million Americans, is related to amyloid beta-peptide, the principal component of senile plaques in Alzheimer's disease brain. Oxidative stress, manifested by protein oxidation and lipid peroxidation, among other alterations, is a characteristic of Alzheimer's disease brain. Our laboratory united these two obse...

Assessment of antioxidative activity of alkaloids from Huperzia selago and Diphasiastrum complanatum using in vitro systems.

Free radical-induced oxidative damage is implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorders, and antioxidants are presumably of therapeutic value in such diseases. Our previous data indicated that free radicals are strongly associated with brain aging and also play an important role in cytotoxicity of amyloidogenic proteins including -synuclein and amyloid , which accumulate in bra...
